Over the coming weeks I expect plenty of people will be wetting a line at most locations throughout the Mid-North Coast. And based on all reports to date, I have no doubt some terrific action will be enjoyed by those willing to get out on the water and wet a line.

In the estuaries, flathead continue to star however whiting numbers are now picking up nicely. Best results on the lizards are coming from further up the Hastings and Maria, with whitebait, prawns and lures of all types each proving successful. For the whiting, beach worms and yabbies remain the pick of the baits, with the back channel and around Blackmans producing the better results. Lake Cathie as usual is also worth a look with either baits or surface lures. 

On the bream scene, numbers remain consistent, with lure enthusiasts enjoying the better action. Surface fizzers and the like are now really beginning to come into their own. 

On the prawning front, results to date this moon have been largely disappointing with overall numbers down and the size still not great. Hopefully the latter part of this week will see some improvement.

On the beaches, mulloway numbers remain excellent with North Beach producing a solid run of school sized fish to around 8 kilos, while Lighthouse has yielded a slightly larger grade. Beach worms and fresh tailor have been the baits of choice. 

On the bream front, Lighthouse has given up the odd reasonable fish together with a few whiting. Tailor however have been spasmodic with only a few choppers here and there.

Off the rocks, the odd tailor has shown up with Lighthouse and Blueface locally producing a few reasonable fish. At present, the bite is brief with a pre dawn start a must. 

On the drummer front, there is still the odd fish about, however the diehard enthusiasts say there is plenty of water between them. Cunjevoi has been achieving the better results. 

On the land-based game scene, little to report locally as yet, however we are again hearing stories of cobia not far north of town.

Offshore reports have picked up with a few nice days earlier in the week seeing some terrific action. Ocean Star managed some nice catches of snapper, pearl perch and kingfish, while the FAD has also produced mahi mahi. Local angler Brian lean also caught and released a 98cm snapper weighing 11.2 kilos on a soft vibe which is a sensational fish. 

Unfortunately this weekend does not look so rosy, with big nor’easters predicted to spoil the offshore fun once again.

Finally, don’t forget this years Penn Fish of the year competition ends next Tuesday, so you haven’t got too long if you wish to take out a category or two.
