Lachlan Eggert from 2nd Wauchope Scout Group recently achieved the Scout Section’s highest award - the Australian Scout Medallion (ASM). Lachie, along with other awardees from across the state, was awarded the Medallion by Neville Tomkins, OAM, JP, the Chief Commissioner of Scouts Australia, NSW at a ceremony in Sydney.

The Australian Scout Medallion is considered the pinnacle of their scouting career, with only four per cent of scouts achieving it.
There are three parts in earning the ASM. These are:
- to participate in a Scout Leadership course
- to demonstrate an active Leadership role within Scouting
- to achieve the Adventurer Level Cord
Lachie achieved his Adventurer Level Cord earlier this year, followed up by his Activity for his ASM Award.
This is where he learnt to delegate jobs out to leaders and parents, and oversee the progress of his planning over six months of hard work, to help him achieve his aim and showcase his new-found leadership skills.
This included having people organise the invitations, parents coming together to organise the food and the leaders to run activities for the youth members and their siblings that were going to be there on the night.
He also organised for the State Commissioner for Scouts and the Regional Commissioner Scouts to attend along with other dignitaries and also for past members of the group to attend on the night.
This award means a lot to me because I tried really hard and did my best to get it and it tested my abilities in leadership.

Lachie has demonstrated a good leadership role within Scouting, becoming the Scout Youth Council Chair for the north Coast Region for the last twelve months as well as attending meetings on a State Level. Lachie is now at the end of his Scout time and is ready to move on to his next big challenge in the Venturer section of the Scout movement, the Queen Scout Award.
“I like scouts because it gives you a lot of independence and opportunities you wouldn't get elsewhere. This award means a lot to me because I tried really hard and did my best to get it and it tested my abilities in leadership,” said Lachie.
“Also I had a lot of support and help from other people to get the award which I really appreciated.”
His mother, Ann Eggert says he has gained a lot of self-confidence from being in scouts.
“ It teaches many life skills including independence, leadership, working with others and problem solving. I am very proud of him achieving this award. He has worked hard to get it and not many scouts achieve it, he really deserves it,” she said.
2nd Wauchope Scout is always looking for new members in any of their three sections for boys and girls aged between six and fourteen. At the moment, they are also seeking more leaders to help run the sections and the group as a whole.
