Australia and England player ratings for second Test

Australia

David Warner - 5: Showed application in both innings, but yet to take this series by the scruff of the neck. Marked lower for role in Bancroft run out.

Cameron Bancroft - 3: Sold up the creek in the first innings by his partner and nicked off in the second. Will look forward to playing on home track.

Usman Khawaja - 6: Steady performance by the No.3, who will draw confidence from the way he played Moeen Ali.

Steve Smith - 6: Seemed to engage with opposition more than usual after tense build-up. Call not to enforce follow-on was source for debate, but can point to scoreboard.

Peter Handscomb - 5: Pushed through difficult period on first night but looked troubled second dig. Needs a big score to bed down his position.

Shaun Marsh - 9: Outstanding century backed selectors' faith in him. Proved the difference between the two sides.

Tim Paine - 8: Very good with the gloves again. Half-century changed flow of game in first innings.

Mitchell Starc - 7: Not yet at his best, but still finished with eight wickets such is his potency.

Pat Cummins - 8: The most consistent of the three quicks who did not get just desserts on scoreboard. Played another invaluable knock in lower order.

Nathan Lyon - 8: Superb match from Australia's premier spinner, whose ability to attack and defend is priceless for captain.

Josh Hazlewood - 7: Like Starc, yet to hit his straps but produced the goods when needed on last day with wickets of Root and Woakes.

England

Alastair Cook - 5: Looked good in both innings then got out to Lyon. Team needs him to do a lot more.

Mark Stoneman - 5: Battling opener who tries hard but questions remain if he is up to Test standard.

James Vince - 2: Real worry for England at No.3. Get the feeling he won't get near first-up effort in Brisbane.

Joe Root - 6: High-class innings in run chase, but half-centuries aren't enough. Loses a mark for decision to send Australia in.

Dawid Malan - 5: Faced decent number of balls in both knocks but another with reservations in this class.

Moeen Ali - 3: Bowling has lost fizz and No.6 looks a spot or two too high for him.

Jonny Bairstow - 6: Has been steady but needs to do more as senior player in inexperienced team. Should be moved to No.6.

Chris Woakes - 7: Showed ticker with the bat and played strong support role to Anderson. Much improved effort.

Craig Overton - 6: Claimed big wicket of Smith on debut and batted with courage, but is he good enough with bat and ball?

Stuart Broad - 7: Has been his team's best bowler this series. With luck will get a big bag soon.

James Anderson - 8: Gave England fighting chance with maiden five-wicket haul in Australia after disappointing in first innings.
