It was fascinating to see our state coalition politician, Melinda Pavey, Minister for Roads, photographed at the centre of the celebration to open the piece of Pacific Highway from the Oxley Highway to Kundabung, along with the federal member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker and member for Lyne, David Gillespie, waxing lyrical over an achievement for which none of them can claim any responsibility for obtaining the funding.
Ms Pavey as the NSW state government roads minister does not fund this highway which is federally funded.
This funding was set aside by the Labor government when Rob Oakeshott was the federal member and the Labor Party quarantined it to ensure it would be used solely to fund the duplication of the Pacific Highway.
Nowhere in this article are the number of deaths which occurred during this construction phase mentioned. Those that died are not given the respect of being remembered.
(Editor’s note: This story does in fact focus on the loss of life along this stretch of highway: Upgrade of horror highway stretch brings hope)
Neither is this section of the highway completed, as it goes into a single lane to pass under the Port Macquarie exit at the donut.
All northbound traffic entering the highway, enters a single lane only. When will this section be duplicated?
It’s time the facts were exposed and remembered. The Australian Labor Party under the previous government should be recognized for funding the completion of the mid north coast Pacific Highway project.
