A soil sample from the campus will be incorporated in the Anzac Memorial Centenary Project as a symbolic reflection of the value and importance the Anzac legend holds in the hearts and minds of all Australians.
The centenary project is a $40 million redevelopment of the memorial in Sydney's Hyde Park.
Port Macquarie RSL Sub-branch president Greg Laird joined Hastings Secondary College Port Macquarie Campus representatives to collect the soil sample from the school campus grounds.
The soil sample will form part of an artwork.
Artist Fiona Hall was selected to create an artwork for the memorial’s Hall of Service.
She proposed a plaque be created for every town, suburb and locality around NSW where people enlisted from for World War I.
A sample of soil collected from each area will be displayed alongside the place name.
Almost 1700 plaques will be featured around the walls of the Hall of Service.
Hastings Secondary College history teacher Stuart Jackson said it was terrific for students to participate in the Soil Collection Program and have a connection with history, the town and veterans.
A Lone Pine seedling will be planted at the campus to mark the soil sample’s geographical location.
Port Macquarie RSL Sub-branch president Greg Laird said it was great for Hastings Secondary College Port Macquarie Campus to take part in the initiative.
“I applaud their efforts to do this,” he said.
