One year ago the Port News wrote about young Seppe Beeckmans who was told in a very special way of his mother’s pregnancy. It was captured in an adorable video filmed at Lighthouse Beach.
His father, Jordy Beeckmans, filmed his son’s reaction to the family’s newest arrival when he visited hospital on April 7.
What Seppe thought was a general check up for his mum, Kathleen Luyckx, was actually a scheduled caesarean where little Sophia was introduced to the world and a surprised and overwhelmed Seppe.
Earlier in the pregnancy, the couple were told their new baby would be a boy. To their later surprise it was revealed their little bundle of joy was in fact a girl.
“For about six weeks we were expecting it to be a boy. But then we found out it was a girl, and we felt a bit confused, we felt a bit guilty because we had a name chosen and everything,” said Mr Beeckmans.
“When I found out it was going to be a girl and not a boy, at first I was kind of disappointed. That was before she was born,” Seppe added.
“I got over it, especially when she was born. She was so cute.
“I can still be a great big brother, but I’ll have to play with dolls. But that’s ok because I’m not a fan of wrestling and stuff anyway.”
The Belgian couple are very happy with their bundle of joy, who they describ as a happy and easy baby.
For Seppe, being a big brother comes naturally for the kind-hearted primary school boy.
His biggest challenge most recently was under-going surgery in an attempt to mend a loss of hearing in his right ear.
“He was born with a single-sided deafness, so he has a good ear and an ear that doesn’t hear much at all,” Mrs Luyckx said.
“We left this latest surgery decision completely up to Seppe.”
Seppe said he was “a little scared” to have the surgery, but wanted to see if it would work.
“If I can get full hearing in the ear it will be worth it, but if not it doesn’t matter because I’m use to only having hearing on one side,” he said.
“But I just want to know what it’s like to hear normally like everyone else.”
The end of the story is as lovely as the start, with Seppe rewarded for his bravery.
His kitten ran away several months ago without a trace, leaving Seppe very upset.
However his parents surprised him with a new best friend, a kitten called AJ, earning them a smile as big as when he first laid eyes on baby sister Sophia.
