We are local social workers who feel dismayed at the decision of the Australian Government to dismiss the wishes of the Aboriginal people to constitutionally enshrine an advisory body to the Parliament. The Uluru statement was drafted following a three-day summit of more than 300 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community leaders and legal experts in May, following a year of consultation. The outright rejection of the proposal leaves no room for dialogue and is another opportunity missed to address the historic injustice done. This continues the long history of the Aboriginal voice not being heard.

We believe that the current decision of the Australian government to dismiss the proposal is not about the unwillingness of the Australian people to support a legislative change but about a lack of political will and leadership in Canberra.
We would like to encourage all Australians to express their support to enshrine an Aboriginal advisory body in the constitution.
