Pirates proved too good for Port City in a 50-run victory on Saturday at Oxley Oval with vice-captain Paul Stait leading the way.
Stait hit a valuable 25 with the bat in the lower order before he claimed 4-9 off eight overs in a miserly spell with the ball.
“It was just a bit of old experience,” he said of his bowling figures that saw him claim man-of-the-match honours.
“The ball was swinging a bit and it was overcast so the conditions were pretty good for bowling.”
Everyone chipped in during Pirates innings as it compiled a competitive 9-152 off its 40 overs.
Stait (25), Connor Cook (25) and Mick Foster (25) all contributed, while Tom Connolly (26) got his team off to a good start at the top of the order.
Shane Williams (10), Jared Humphreys (12) and captain Paul Munro (13) all hit double figures.
Stait admitted the key to the victory was mainly due to a solid fielding performance.
“I don’t think we put too many chances down and their ‘keeper probably had 10 or so chances through catches or stumpings,” he said.
Cook, Humphreys and Connolly continued their impressive start to the season.
“Connor took three wickets and Jared took a wicket as well,” Stait said.
Port City captain Jason Swain wasn’t too disheartened by his team’s performance and attributed their batting woes to early-season rustiness.
“Our batsmen just couldn’t cope with that late inswing,” he said.
“We haven’t had much time out in the middle – we had the bye in the first week and batted on a sticky wicket last week.
“Paul Stait bowled well, but we batted ourselves into a hole, especially with his awkward length.”
Swain lamented his team’s inability to end Pirates innings when they were 9-112.
“They put on 40 for the last wicket and that’s probably what cost us in the end,” he said.
“We thought 120 would have been good to chase and 150 was probably par for that wicket.
“We might be zero and two, but the overall performance has been pretty good.”
Elsewhere, Comboyne Kendall were no match for Macquarie Hotel as the Macca cruised to a 203-run win.
Ethan Hyde led the way with 98 while Mitch Quinn also registered a half-century at the top of the order in a 149-run opening stand.
Comboyne fielded a team of only eight players, won the toss and remarkably sent Macquarie in.
Macquarie were ruthless with the bat, posting an imposing 7-261 before they rolled Comboyne Kendall for just 58.
