Dayna will have been teaching for 20 years in 2018, after beginning her career in Avalon, focusing on performing arts.
A Port Macquarie teacher for 12 years, Mrs Moritz Moved to Port 12 years ago. She is now the assistant principal of the school.
“Coming to Tacking Point was a wonderful continuation from what I had been doing with performing arts,” she said.
“Tacking Point is known for many wonderful things but we really stand out in performing arts. They are so amazing.”
She had no educators in her family, so the choice to become a teacher was a surprising one to her family.
“I came in as a high achieving but hard to reign in student myself, so I have a special place (in my heart) for those students and that is who I wanted to work with,” she said.
“Taking these talented and gifted children who, for whatever reason, things are coming together but not having them content to just sit there. So what can they do, where can they shine?
“Whether it be performing arts or academia or sporting … giving them that chance to shine is something I love to do.”
Her workmate, deputy principal Roslyn Mangold, is also receiving a citation.
A teacher for 28 years, Mrs Mangold started in Western Sydney and has been in Port Macquarie for 22 years, 19 of those at Westport Public.
“My mum was an awesome role model as an educator. Once I got into it I really enjoyed working with kids who have found learning challenging,” she said.
“To see them finally achieve something they’ve worked really hard for is really rewarding, as well as now working with teachers and working on their pedagogy.
“I think now we work less in isolation and more as a team, and schools are really a community now.”
Mrs Mangold said she puts the recognition down to her love of the job.
“I guess I just love working with teachers and students and families. I believe I do the job the best I can and there are so many teachers in this system that deserve an award like this,” she said.
“I feel I’m accepting it on behalf of everyone. I don’t feel more deserving than anyone else.”
