The Port Macquarie-Hastings community is already doing a great job in conserving water, and with summer on its way, it’s a great time to review our water habits to continue to help protect our precious waterways and water catchment areas.
“Our region is currently in a strong position as we head into the warmer weather, with storage levels in our dams at 94.7% capacity,” Council Acting Group Manager, Clayton Miechel said.
“With our water storage in such a healthy position it is unlikely that we will need water restrictions this year, however it is good practice to stay mindful of water conservation given the extremely dry season we have been experiencing so far.
“This year's Water Week theme is ‘Water – the Heart of our Culture’, and encourages the community to explore how water plays such a strong role in our everyday lives, which is particularly relevant for us as we strive to protect our pristine waterways and beaches,” Mr Miechel said.
As part of an ongoing commitment to water education, Council is offering a number of FREE activities during National Water Week, as follows:
Water Stories at the Library
Free story time sessions, craft and visit from ‘Whizzy the Waterdrop’ for preschool aged children (no bookings required) at Wauchope Library on Monday October 16 from 10.30am; Port Macquarie Library on Tuesday October 17 from 10.30am and Laurieton Library on Wednesday October 17 from 10.30am.
Catchment tour
A free catchment to tap water tour is on Thursday October 19, bookings are essential.
If you’ve ever wondered where your water comes from and how it gets to your home, then this behind the scenes bus tour is a must.
The tour will include Koree Island Pumping Station, the Wauchope Water Treatment Plant, Cowarra Dam and the Reclaimed Water Treatment Plant should time permit. 8.45am for 9am departure from Players Theatre. Return approximately 1pm.
Morning tea provided.
