The group has submitted a proposed route for the extension of the trail from Henry Kendall Road to Ocean Drive along the water edge behind the industrial bays and along Haven Circuit out to Ocean Drive.
Creek to Creek volunteer Peter Nash said the next step is to have a Environmental Impact study (ESI) done before a Development Application can be submitted.
“This process will take a while but it is necessary that everything is in place for when a grant becomes available and we will be in a position to apply,” he said.
As ESI studies are expensive to carry out the volunteers are appealing to the community to assist where possible.
Local residents in the Laurieton area recently celebrated the completion of an upgrade to the Queens Lake Foreshore Trail. The new all-weather boardwalk, which extends 150 metres, bridges the area between the Queens Lake Retirement Village and Henry Kendall Reserve whilst also providing an observation deck complete with seating.
Mr Nash said the trail restoration needs to be a community effort.
“The more people involved the lighter the work load and the broader the knowledge base we have at our disposal,” he said.
“There are a lot of jobs to do that don't involve physical labour, from helping with fundraising, grant submissions, tea making or simply spreading the word.”
On Friday, September 22 the community group met as part of their weekly working bee. Members were laying cement to assist in allowing the water to drain effectively and to flow under not over the boardwalk.
Volunteer Mark Heydon said he enjoys the sense of achievement which comes with making something to benefit the community.
Another volunteer Toby Parsons said the boardwalk had enabled older people in wheelchairs, with walking frames or those with disabilities the ability to get close to the water to enjoy the natural, scenic environment.
“It’s about social inclusion,” he said.
