A woman has died after a collision involving a B-double, two sedans and utility on the Pacific Highway near Telegraph Point.
The accident occurred at about 8.50am on Tuesday, September 26 near what has become a notorious stretch of the highway south of the Pembrooke Road intersection.
Emergency services were called to the southbound lanes of the highway, between Pear Tree and Bill Hill roads, after reports of a multi-vehicle crash.
A woman, who was a passenger in one of the sedans, died at the scene.
Emergency services are working to free a person from the wreckage.
The highway remains closed in both directions with traffic being diverted via Oxley Highway, Redbank Road/Stoney Creek Road, rejoining the highway at Pembrooke Road.
Heavy vehicles are being parked on-site however can use the New England Highway as an alternative route.
The Pacific Highway is expected to be closed for some time as investigations are underway.
All other drivers and passengers are out of their vehicles and being assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics.
The injured are being taken to Port Macquarie Base Hospital for further treatment. They include two adults and a six-year-old child who has sustained a fractured leg and possible pelvic injuries.
The child will be flown to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.
The Newcastle and Tamworth based Westpac Rescue Helicopters have been tasked to the area.
This is the second horrific accident on the highway in this location in a matter of weeks.
A four truck crash occurred on September 7 in the same location earlier this month leaving one of the drivers trapped for more than four hours before he could be flown to John Hunter Hospital.
The Roads and Maritime Services has confirmed that in the five years to 2016, there have been 54 crashes recorded on the section of the Pacific Highway from north of the intersection with Hastings River Drive to Telegraph Point.
Residents living in the vicinity of the crash zone have described the highway horror as having a lasting and devastating impact.
An RMS spokesperson said safety improvement works have been carried out on this section of the existing highway.
“In coming months, Telegraph Point will be bypassed as part of the Oxley Highway to Kundabung upgrade, which will improve safety for all road users,” the spokesperson said.
