Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has partnered with Transport NSW to host a number of free cycling festivities that aim to raise awareness of bike safety, encourage people to ride to work, improve riding skills and consider cycling as a great way to stay fit and healthy.
“Whether you’re enjoying a scenic cycle way, mountain bike trail or flying around a competition race track, the Port Macquarie-Hastings offers opportunities for people of all skill levels to get on their bike and enjoy the outdoors,” council acting director Andrew Doig said.
“Council are committed to providing the community with safe and accessible options to enjoy cycling such as building more bike lanes and share paths, while at the same time supporting fun initiatives like Bike Week that really help to grow our local bike culture.”
Port Macquarie-Hastings will showcase a range of family focused events, fun rides, trail terra competitions and ride to work activities kicking, off with a free Bike Week Fun Day at Westport Park on Saturday, September 16.
The main event will feature a number of market stalls, food trucks, bike safety checks, giveaways and a free bike hire for use in the novice bike arena. There’ll also be opportunities to talk health and fitness with staff from NSW Health.
Then on Thursday, September 21, council is encouraging people to ride their bikes to work by rewarding anyone who takes up the challenge with a free barbecue breakfast at the Hay Street forecourt between 7.30am and 10am.
Local business owner and cyclist, Drury Woolnough, is looking forward to Bike Week and has taken riding to work to all new levels, even using his bicycle to run daily errands.
“Drury Lane Eatery is proud to support Bike Week. I’m an avid cyclist and I ride to work every day, we even use a push bike to collect some of our produce for the restaurant,” said Mr Woolnough. People of all ages and abilities are encouraged to get on their bikes, start pedalling and go for a ride during the week.
“Council encourages everyone to strap on a helmet, pump up the tyres and head down to one of the many family fun cycling events on offer as part of Bike Week this year,” added Mr Doig.
NSW Bike Week is an annual event that aims to raise the profile of cycling as a healthy, easy, low cost and environmentally friendly alternative to driving for short trips in the local community.
