But for Hastings Secondary College student Saskia Smith, her work experience will be unlike anything she could have imagined.
The year 11 student will join eleven other passionate and inspiring students who were selected from around Australia for one incredible week of work experience with Bell Shakespeare in Sydney from November 6 to 10.
During their work experience, the students will to connect with the rarely seen side of theatre making.
They will immerse themselves into the facets of a working theatre company including production, casting, design, rehearsals, marketing, box office, fundraising, education, finance and administration.
Interested students were required to submit their application form and statement of intent by the end of June.
Saskia drove the whole process and completed the application form with the support of her mentors including teachers, her parents, friends and family.
“Growing up I always dreamt of being a famous actress and singer,” she said.
“As I’ve grown older my interest in and love for performance continues to be the driving force in everything I do.
“My goal after finishing school is to study music and dramatic arts at NIDA in Sydney. I have been working towards this goal throughout my entire high school life.”
Saskia has been able to attend Bell Shakespeare performances at the Glasshouse, including Othello and Henry V.
“I am in awe of the Bell Shakespeare adaptations and the performances continue to pique my curiosity about him and his style,” she said.
“I've recently been involved in my school production and, being in year 11, I have had more opportunity to contribute behind-the-scenes.
“My school has done several productions over the years and all performances have been written and edited by students and teachers together.
“Opportunities such as Bell Shakespeare will only eventuate with a significant amount of sacrifice and dedication.
“The opportunity will develop my dramatic ability. I am a collaborative student and I will share the skills learnt from the Bell Shakespeare work experience with the rest of the school.”
