Superintendent Kam Baker said it is imperative that families also understand what to do when a bushfire is approaching.

“The Get Ready Weekend is a great idea and the Rural Fire Service is encouraging all residents to get involved,” he said.

“Along with completing your bushfire survival plan, we would also encourage families to make sure their property is prepared for the upcoming season and to ensure that all family members know and understand what is in their plans.

“This weekend is a great information day and a great time for residents to engage with their local brigade and to find out what the bushfire threats are in their local area.”

Supt Baker said brigades would have information available for new and long-term residents.

“People need to stay up to date with fire ratings on a daily basis by checking the Rural Fire Service website or the Bureau of Meteorology sites,” he added.

Supt Baker said the very dry conditions on the Mid-North Coast meant it was vital that residents the information suitable to their particular area.

“We are certainly concerned with the current conditions and also the upcoming summer.

“The lower than average rainfall and increased temperatures forecast are a real concern.”

District officer Stuart Robb said residents need to contact the rural fire service to arrange a permit if they are considering hazard reduction burns.

“The bushfire danger period is in place now and continues through to March 31,” he said.

“Anyone considering a hazard reduction burn must contact us for a permit. A permit offer will come out to the property for an inspection. A permit will be issued, conditional on the current weather conditions. 

“Currently, permits are restricted to small piles. There are also other conditions placed on the issuing of permits, including the landholder must check if permits have been suspended.”
