The Kendall National Violin Competition has announced the piece Paper Boats by Sydney composer Emma Greenhill as the winner of the 2017 Watermark Composition.
Ms Greenhill’s work Paper Boats for violin and piano will be performed as a compulsory piece in the final round of the Kendall National Violin Competition on September 16 in Kendall by all four finalists of the competition.
Ms Greenhill studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and won the prize to the value of $2000.
She has performed her own compositions twice at the Sydney Opera House. Her work has been performed by a number of Sydney based chamber groups both in Australia and internationally.
In 2012 Ms Greenhill was the recipient of the James Easton memorial composition prize and in 2014 she was placed first in the Verge Awards’ composition prize.
The Watermark composition prize is offered by the Kendall National Competition for the second time in 2017 and is generously supported by private donors to the competition.
Seven entries were blind reviewed by the judging panel. Paper Boats attracted decisive support.
Sydney Conservatorium professor Ole Bohn, who is also a member of the judging panel and a leading international exponent of contemporary violin repertoire, was impressed by Greenhill’s work.
Mr Bohn said it demonstrate very idiomatic writing for both the violin and the piano, good musical ideas and fine musical progression.
The artistic director of the Kendall National Violin Competition Goetz Richter congratulated Emma Greenhill on her achievement as the second Watermark Composition Prize winner.
“The Watermark Prize is a wonderful example how the generous support of music and musicians by the community of Kendall enriches everyone’s life,” he said.
“This is a splendid opportunity for young composers and Emma’s work will inspire and excite all at the finals in September.”
The finals of the Kendall National Violin Competition will take place on September 16 at the Kendall School of Arts.
