Port Macquarie world champion swimmer James Magnussen has offered his support for the development of a new aquatic centre in Port Macquarie. Magnussen, who has swum hundreds of kilometres in the existing Port Macquarie pool said it was about time that Port Macquarie had a better facility.
In his letter of support, Magnussen said:
During my teenage years I spent hours in the Port Macquarie pool and since I have been swimming around Australia and the world I have realised our current pool is well out of date.
We need a new facility that can hold major carnivals, that people can train in year round and that will offer training opportunities for other squads from city areas who now travel to places like Noosa and the Gold Coast as our pool is not up to scratch.
I think it’s important that we have an eight to 10 lane outdoor pool and an indoor 25 metre pool as a minimum. If we are to encourage more young people to aspire to represent their country, we need better facilities.
Of course many aquatic centres also have gyms, learn to swim pools and areas for aged people which are also important.
Swimming has always been an integral part of the Port Macquarie community whether it be at the elite level, for fitness or fun and it is important this identity is not forgotten.
A new facility would see renewed numbers in the community and support once more behind the push for a healthy and active town.
