The students were introduced to William Shakespeare classic The Merchant of Venice in a workshop hosted by the Bell Shakespeare Company.
Spokesman Felix Jozeps said the workshop, in the lead-up to the stage performance at The Glasshouse on September 5, provides the students with creative ways to interpret the works of The Bard.
“They can then come and see the performance as a group and have an understanding of the themes of the play,” he said.
Directed by Anne Louise Sarks, the Bell Shakespeare performance explores the tense relationship and prejudices between those that have, and those that don’t. Dark in its humour and bawdy in its romantic hijinks, The Merchant Of Venice takes audiences on a journey of love, mercy and justice.
Featuring three-time Helpmann Award winner, Mitchell Butel (Janet King and Rake) as the defiant Shylock, and Jessica Tovey (Wolf Creek and Wonderland) as Portia, this masterfully envisioned production tackles the prejudices and preconceived notions of one of Shakespeare’s most challenging plays.
