Kendall Blues secured the Hastings League minor premiership on Saturday with a hard-fought 28-14 win over Comboyne.
It was the Blues first win at Comboyne in five years in a match captain Beau Kettle simply described as “a good, hard game of footy.”
The Blues led 12-10 at the break and went on with it in the second half, avenging an earlier season 28-18 loss to the Tigers at Kendall.
Kettle said it was a pleasing result and a match they needed heading into the semi-final series next weekend.
“We had a forfeit last weekend so we went into the game pretty fresh,” he said.
“They were down on numbers, but it definitely gives us a mental edge for the finals if we play them there.”
Dean and Todd Hurrell provided plenty of questions for the Blues defence, but it held firm for the majority of the match.
“They’re still classy players and you can see that they’ve played at a pretty high level,” Kettle said.
Motivation for the Blues was high as the minor premiership was on the line and Anthony Conlan was celebrating his 100th game for the club.
They also felt they owed the Tigers one from their previous match.
“Everyone worked well as a team and we got the job done,” the captain said.
“We don’t play fancy footy, but if you don’t make many errors you are really hard to beat.”
The Blues tackle Lower Macleay this weekend before the finals start and Kettle said they would try not to look too far ahead.
“They’re going to be a really tough side to beat and the finals are shaping up really nicely,” he said.
