The first pylons for the $53,000 bridge to link William and Buller streets, in the Kooloonbung Creek reclamation scheme are being sunk today.
Four 27-foot pylons will form the abutments for the new bridge. The concrete pylons were poured by Mr Les Jobson at Rawdon Island. They were delivered to the site on Friday morning, and pile-driving equipment arrived that afternoon. The framework was erected over the weekend, ready to commence pile-driving today. S Turner and Sons of Gosford, accepted a contract two weeks ago to complete the bridge in six months.
The developer of the scheme, Mr Peter Vaggelas, hopes to have the bridge completed by Christmas. He is offering the contractors a bonus of $300 a week for the number of weeks they complete the contract before the expiry date.
The bridge will be 110 feet long. It will have a 24-foot carriageway, with five-foot walkways on each side. Walkways will also be provided under the bridge so pedestrians do not have to cross the bridge to the other side. The existing footbridge will remain until the new bridge is ready.
Camden Haven assists nursing service appeal
The Camden Haven district plans to do more than its share towards an appeal for a domestic nursing service, launched by the Port Macquarie Senior Citizens’ Welfare Committee.
The committee must raise $1200 for a car before the Hospitals Commission will consider appointing a nursing sister. At a public meeting at Laurieton on Thursday night, Messrs Duncan Holding, Jack Lindsay and Ian Read, were appointed to organise fundraising.
The nursing service is designed to provide medical supervision for sick and aged persons without them having to go to hospital. The sister, who will be based at Hastings District Hospital, will make regular visits to her patients at their homes. The Senior Citizens Welfare Committee has already raised more than $500.
Golfers form Veterans’ Club
At a meeting in the clubhouse last Thursday night, a Port Macquarie Veterans’ Golf Club was formed. Golfers of affiliated clubs are eligible for membership if they are over 50 years of age.
Mr C.T. Uptin was elected president of the club; Mr J.G. Pike is secretary-treasurer; Mr Keith Campbell captain-handicapper and Mr Glen Fowler will assist with the handicapping.
Membership fee was fixed at one dollar per annum, and the club will run its own bank account, competitions, and social occasions. For a trial period of one month, beginning in September, there will be a Tuesday afternoon event for members of the Veterans’ Club.
Trophies for the first four events were donated by Messrs Les Nelson, R. Sheridan, J. Pike and R. Gentle. The handicappers are considering a proposal to let members out a stroke each time they start in a competition, and return to their original handicap as soon as they win a trophy. Mr. Pike will be happy to accept a membership fee from anyone interested in joining.
