Pastor Greg Campion from Grace Church said he was drawn to the partnership as an opportunity to help unemployed youth gain necessary skills for employment.
“It meant creating a partnership to make a difference for some young people who needed a fair go,” he said.
“You can see everyone is a winner in this partnership. Our building needs become opportunities for unemployed people to learn new skills, local business has a way to give back into the community and for our Grace church people to know who are community minded business’ they can support.
“This has been a great experience.”
Organised by training provider Novaskill, the training program contained theory and practical components which is an opportunity for people looking to enter the building trade to get an idea of the kind of work that is involved in this industry.
Partnership supervisor Matt Collins said once it was clear what the training program was about, a partnership of necessary work, supply of materials, and quality skill supervision was created.
“After four months of labour, two days per week, a quality job was completed providing a much-needed renovated babies cry room, a new kitchen installation and retaining walls for an outdoor hospitality area,” he said.
“This kind of training is a great opportunity for people looking to enter the building trade to get an idea of the kind of work that is involved in this industry.”
Pastor Campion praised the young people who ‘did a commendable job under Matt’s careful instruction’.
“I would recommend other community groups creating such partnerships,” he added.
A number of local businesses generously supported the project by providing materials and services. Grace Church and Novaskil would like to thank the assistance of Petries Mitre 10, Fastplast building supplies, Steeline, Concept Design Kitchens and Pycon Homes.
