Launching the back to back games was Wauchope’s B Grade team.
They faced the second-placed Tacking Point Thunder Cougars so they knew it would be a tough battle.
The team was raring to go and came out strong in attack within the first minutes managing to put the Cougars defence under the pump consistently.
Wauchope had many quality shots on goal only to be denied by the quality goalkeeping skills of their opponents.
The Cougars fought back hard, with a strong defence headed by players player Heath Thompson, Wauchope managed to keep them at bay for a time.
With exceptional game reading and interceptions, Heath, Rhys Jones and Paul Mason kept the ball firmly within Wauchope’s grasp, but unfortunately the Cougars were able to sneak two goals through.
Coach Kyle Tipping was thrilled with the way the team are playing.
“They are really working well together, it’s just unfortunate the scoreline (2-0) didn’t show what really happened out there on the field,” he said.
Backing up after the action-packed game from B grade saw the C grade Wolf Hounds take to the field against Port City determined to continue their reign as the top dog in the competition.
With only one substitute and a few of the boys having just played in the B grade game before it was always going to be a close one.
Coach and the team goalkeeper Wayne McDermott had a plan coming into the game to try some new structures and strategies.
“With these double headers and being at the top of the table there’s no better time than now to try things out in preparation for the finals,” he said.
A strong defensive line of Rhys Jones, Tim Halliwell and Players Player Greg Price saw a strong holdout of the Port City offensive players and good layoffs to the midfielders.
Convincing stick skills and quick set passing saw Kai Jacobs and Sean Burke dominate the play in the middle of the field.
It allowed many opportunities for the strikers Cody Millward, Finn Lawrie, Jordan Norris and Grant Rogers.
B grade goalkeeper Shaun John traded in his pads to play on the field this week and was instrumental in converting one such opportunity into the first goal of the game.
A slight touch deflected the ball from a slap shot behind the Port City goalkeeper’s pads and into the net.
The intensity ramped up with both Port City determined to score and Wauchope determined to keep the lead, resulting in a few cards handed out during the remainder of the match.
The last five minutes saw the Wolf Hounds down one player and battling strong in defence try to deny Port City any opportunity to level the playing field, with minutes to go a short corner was called.
Port City used this to their advantage pulling all players up determined to breach the Wauchope defence, so it came down to five Wauchope players against 10 Port City players determined to score.
Port City was denied with the final buzzer reflecting a 1-0 win for Wauchope, proving again why they are on top of the ladder.
