The NSW government is calling for the introduction of a national five-star safety rating system for quad bikes to help save lives on farms.
Since 2011, 115 people have been killed in quad bike accidents on Australian farms - 32 in NSW alone. We want to work with manufacturers and farmers to develop a scheme that would give buyers the information they need to make the safest possible choice.
Our government is providing incentives to encourage farmers to improve the safety of their quad bikes; education programs to support safer usage; and now we want to give consumers better information to support their decision making. A rating system would build on the NSW government’s $2 million Quad Bike Safety Improvement Program, which provides free training and helmets for those who complete the course, rebates for protective devices, and safer side-by-side vehicles. Gender equality
I urge people to identify the challenges faced by women and suggest solutions for these issues, via the Have Your Say online survey.
There is still a gap between men and women’s financial status, workforce participation, care and family responsibilities, and vulnerability to violence, among other issues. The government is working on the state’s first Women’s Strategy to tackle these issues. The strategy will focus on addressing key challenges including economic empowerment, health and wellbeing, culture and identity, and leadership.
Community participation is key to develop an effective strategy. We need as many involved as possible to identify and overcome the impacts of inequity and discrimination on women and girls. Have your say at women.nsw.gov.au/news/items/nsw-womens-strategy-public-consultation. Provide feedback online, via email or post, until Monday, July 31.
