In arguably their best first-half performance of the year, United found what had been missing for several weeks and started to find the back of the net.

Striker Matt Broderick scored a brace, while Jack Pilgrim and Josh Moore also got on the score sheet as United took a three-goal lead into the break.

United could have inflicted more pain on the defending premiers in the second half, but were unable to back up their scintillating opening 45 minutes.

Coach Nathan Wade didn’t believe his side played any better than last week when they suffered a 3-1 defeat.

“We played just as well as the week before, but the ball started going in the back of the net,” he said.

It could have been a more lopsided result as United put the ball in the net six times only to have two of those ruled out.

“I would have liked a few more after the break, but it was a bit of a lacklustre second half,” Wade said.

“It was one of those ones where we knew the game was won, they knew they’d lost so both teams sort of went through the motions a bit.”

Wade was hopeful the win would prove to be a turning point in United’s season.

“Hopefully we can build from that performance into the finals,” he said.

“On our day we know we can beat anyone, we just need everyone turning up with the same attitude on the same day.”
