They are the words of Sascha Chapman, Luminosity guest speaker, founder of the Seabin project and former student at Port Macquarie TAFE.
Sascha is project operations manager at Seabin, an international company creating innovative solutions to the problem of plastic litter in the world’s oceans.
Ms Chapman says TAFE NSW was a great place to gain her qualifications.
“I´ve always been a bit of a dreamer and found it hard to concentrate at school, but at TAFE it was a more hands-on, practical approach and this resonated much more and gave me the confidence to go out into the workforce,” Ms Chapman said.
“After completing my TAFE NSW qualification, I landed a job in Wauchope at the Hastings Co-operative head office as the receptionist. I spent about three years with this great company and gained a lot of experience in a fast-paced office environment.”
After working in the mining industry in Western Australia, and extensive travel, Ms Chapman developed a keen interest in the environment. A chance meeting during her travels with CEO and co-founder of Seabin, Peter Ceglinski, led to a big step up in her career.
“We were discussing the Seabin project and he mentioned that he thought with my experience I would be a suitable candidate to help. I jumped at the opportunity, and here I am 12 months later,” says Ms Chapman.
Ms Chapman now lives in Spain, working hard with a small team to build Seabin.
“There are so many aspects of my job that I love, but the most important aspect I feel is being able to bring awareness to the global plastic pollution issue,” she said.
