Saunders was fishing towards the jetty in the canals near Settlement Point early last week when Harrison landed a 47-centimetre Queensland groper.
Being the mad fisho that he is, Saunders felt his catch was very rare for waters around the Hastings as the fish is more commonly found in waters closer to the border.
“It went really hard, especially on an eight-pound line,” he said.
“It was netted by my eight-year-old son Harrison and I think it’s very rare to be found here.”
Saunders said he had done his research and was surprised at what he found.
“The interesting thing about this fish is that these Queensland gropers grow up to about two to three metres long, so perhaps Port Macquarie is the home to a monster Queensland groper,” he said.
The fish was released soon after being caught.
“I don’t eat seafood,” Mr Saunders said.
