The school name will be printed on them and there is a place to have children’s names written. This initiative is designed to encourage students to adopt healthy eye-health habits and to wear their sunglasses at recess and lunch when UV rays are at their strongest.
At present, 202 schools have acted on this initiative. Recent medical research has revealed that children under the age of 12 years are unable to block as much UV radiation as adults eyes, making their eyes more susceptible to the damage caused by UV rays.
UV rays are at their strongest between 10am and 2pm, the times during which students are at recess, lunch or playing sports club’s sport.
A broad-brimmed hat has been an integral part of primary school uniforms since the mid-1990s, but only offers 40 percent protection from UV rays, with sunglasses completing the final 60 percent of protection.
