Some 1000 birthing kits will be distributed through Zonta’s Birthing Kit Foundation of Australia to overseas countries.
The foundation ensure’s kits are available for use by women in rural and remote areas in countries with the highest rate or number of maternal and neonatal deaths such as Afghanistan, Nigeria, Kenya, DR Congo, Chad, Uganda, Ethiopia and Papua New Guinea.
Zonta club president Margaret Bateman congratulated everyone involved in the assembly day.
“The 1000 assembled kits will go back to the Birthing Kit Foundation of Australia in readiness for distribution,” she said.
“We will be informed as to where the kits are sent in due course.
“The event was only possible through the support of a number of generous sponsors including KFC Port Macquarie, Port Macquarie Private Hospital (Ramsay Health Care), 5-Star Medical Centre, Hermitage Dental, Virginia's Apothecare, John and Helen Ross OAM, Paul and Mary McCarthy and Robyn Ryan OAM.
“Without your generous support we could not have delivered this successful event,” the Zonta president said.
Guest speaker Dr Ray Hodgson from Australians for Women's Health, told the gathering about the benefits of birthing kits in preventing infection, providing a clean, safe birth, thus saving the lives of many mothers and babies.
Mrs Bateman also thanked local Zonta Club of Port Macquarie members for their support and help.
