PORT Macquarie Swimming Club has been crowned Swimming North Coast Short Course Champions for 2017 following meets held simultaneously at Forster and Twin Towns.

The results of both meets were merged to give overall results. With a very strong squad of 26 swimmers attending, Port Macquarie was successful in winning the championship for the first time.
Over 25 clubs competed, covering an area from Forster to Tweed Heads. Port Macquarie had a considerable lead in the point score over second place Forster and third place Trinity Lismore, followed by Lismore Workers and Coffs Harbour.
At these championships, Port Macquarie were awarded five age champions in various age groups. Adam Grant, Nicholas Welch, Grace Bannon, Jessica Grant and Jack Agland.
They were also awarded five runners-up to age champion: Ted Strong, Isaac Rumbel, Zara Phillips, Max Milligan and Kimberley Gosshorn.
Port Macquarie also had three swimmers named as distance champions – Adam Grant, Zara Phillips and Sam Harris.
Port Macquarie Swimming Club president Warren Phillips said he was impressed with how everyone performed.
“Considering that we are known as a summer club and not a winter club makes it an even better achievement,” he said.
“The kids are training the cold at 5am and it’s an outstanding effort. A lot of our newer swimmers competed, which is putting our club in a really good position.
“The club as a whole are very proud of everyone. It’s a big effort, from everyone involved.”
Swimming NSW are hosting the Country Short Course Championships on July 1 and 2, at Homebush, with Port Macquarie Swimming Club sending a strong team.
These swimmers will compete over the weekend in some 30 events Port Macquarie Swimming club will be holding their first Long Course Qualifying Carnival on September 29 and 30.
Preparations for this event are well underway and online entries are now being accepted for this carnival.
