While the grounds remain too wet for play, the fury felt by Hastings sporting groups has got nothing to do with the wet weather.
Moronic is one word to describe an act of mindless vandalism targeting the soccer fields and cricket pitch at Tuffins earlier this week. And it has an entire community enraged.
Twelve months ago, sporting groups were left shaking their heads after a similar incident at Tuffins Lane cancelled weekend events for hundreds of Hastings juniors.
There have been similar incidents of ‘circle work’ along Ocean Drive, at Bruce Porter Reserve at Laurieton and on vacant lots out at Sovereign Hills.
A council spokesperson said the vandalism has caused superficial damage, however the damaged areas will require top dressing.
“Council cannot repair the damage until the fields dry out, and at this point in time it will be mid next week, at the earliest, that sporting groups will be able to use the damaged fields,” the spokesperson said.
Council encourages anyone witnessing vandalism to any of community facilities to immediately report it to the police.
Council will continue to focus on measures to protect our sporting and recreational facilities.
