THE Port City Breakers remain undefeated and sit four points clear at the top of the group 3 ladder after another convincing win.
Dogged by injuries and a lack of personnel, the Wauchope Blues travelled to Port Macquarie on Saturday as the underdogs.
Take nothing away from the Breakers. They were, once again, instrumental in executing their game plan set out by this year’s coach, Dan Kemp.
“It was a typical wet weather game of footy. There was way too much drop ball and way too many penalties. It was a very stop start game,” he said.
“We still have a long way to go until we get to where we want to be. We don’t compare ourselves to the opposition, more to our own expectations.”
Those expectations, Kemp said, are to be even better than they currently are.
“We’re starting to develop our footy. It was always in the plan to start adding some layers to our footy and to become more consistent for the 80 minutes,” he said.
“We still have those periods of the game where we fall away. We need to bring those times down and resurrect it when we get into a slump. The players are doing really well.
“I don’t mean that with any disrespect to anyone, but we have set goals and we think we can play a decent brand of footy, so we want to keep working hard until we get there.”
Breakers fullback Owen Blair scored a hattrick and newcomer Dane Perry made his debut at left centre.
“He looked like a first grader and he’s definitely one we want to groom for first grade, if not for this year certainly next year,” Kemp said.
A few niggling injuries should not hamper the Breakers when they host the Taree City Bulls next weekend in what shapes as their toughest test of the season.
“It’s nice to have a couple of home games at home,” he said. “We spent the first part of the year down south basically, so it’s good now to build some momentum with support and the crowd at home on the way to the finals.”
