Our region received some fantastic news recently that may have flown under your radar.
Tourism Research Australia released the national data of their International Visitor Survey, which surveys international tourists about the trips they’ve taken during the year. It found more international tourists are visiting our region, staying longer and spending more.
For an area like ours which benefits significantly from the tourism industry and its flow-on effect, this is very positive news for the almost 3500 direct jobs sustained by tourism.
What these tourists mean is more local jobs for local people. Cowper received 330,000 international visitors who spent $198 million in the year to March 2017. This is an increase of 8 per cent from last year, and 24 per cent from the previous three years, growing faster than the national average.
A growing tourism industry will continue to develop our local economy and create more jobs. The almost $200 million spent by international tourists is an increase of 29 per cent from the previous three years.
The amount of nights visitors stayed also recorded growth, with international tourists staying more than 3.4 million nights in the region, an increase of 7 per cent from last year, and 19 per cent from the previous three years.
Nationally, tourists from across the globe spent a record $39.8 billion during the 262 million nights they spent in Australia - a five per cent increase from the previous year.
Our local results are growing over and above this national average, so there’s a lot to be optimistic about in Cowper’s tourism industry.
These visitors are coming to appreciate all of the tremendous natural beauty and local attractions that we have to offer here.
In Port Macquarie, it’s attractions like the beautiful coastline, welcoming climate and stunning landscapes that keeps people coming back, and bringing their friends.
