The key to the entry is to gain much needed awareness for the work they do in the Port Macquarie-Hastings are, and to bring in new volunteers.
Port Macquarie Landcare president Bronwyn Newton said they have not taken on a new volunteer for more than 12 months and are in desperate need of helpers.
“At the moment we are on the last year of a six year project that we got funding for six years ago,” she said.
“We need as many volunteers as possible. Ideally I’d like to see another 20 people volunteering to keep up with the needs of what we do.”
The group work three mornings a week, for just a few hours. They mainly weed, but it also depends on the site they are working on.
“We are also restoring the bush back to its natural habitat. We grow all the seeds at our nursery, collect the seeds ourselves and put them back into the bushland,” Mrs Newton said.
“Volunteering is vital to our area. People are very busy and have other things to do, so volunteering isn’t as prominent as it used to be.
“It’s a stern warning that things could get a lot worse because we lack the volunteers to do the work that needs to be done.”
Mrs Newton said it is also important to keep corridors open for koalas and other native animals that move through.
“You wouldn’t believe the horrid water weeds that we have had to remove,” she explained.
“Landcare supply all of the tools and uniform. It’s a great way to keep fit and to make friends, so please volunteer if you can.”
