It’s the ‘Australian made’ logo. It’s how we know what we’re buying and eating is made here in Australia, and we can buy these products to support Australian jobs.

But did you know it’s changing?

Based on the feedback of many Australians, the Country of Origin labels will now be clearer, easier to understand, and give a genuine indication of just how Australian products on our retails shelves are.

Many products on supermarket shelves are made up of a combination of home-grown and imported ingredients. And some may be grown and produced here, but packaged overseas.

It’s clear from community feedback that we all want to know how much of what we eat is grown on our farms, produced in our factories, made or just packaged here in Australia.

Instead of simply the yellow kangaroo in the green triangle, all new packaging will have an easy-to-read yellow slider graphic which shows us what percentage of what we are buying is grown, produced, made or packed in Australia.

It will be a lot easier now to make a choice between products based on how much is actually Australian.

There are a lot of products which have adopted the labelling already, such as Coon Cheese, but you will see more and more products using the new labelling in the next 12 months.

From the July 1, 2018, this labelling will be compulsory for many types of products, but many will choose to adopt the new labelling earlier.

I’m looking forward to seeing the positive impact this will have on many Australian industries.
