Residents are encouraged to take the opportunity of the Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Open Day on Saturday, May 20, to meet local firefighters and learn about fire prevention.
The Port Macquarie Fire Station, at 5 Central Road, is throwing the fire station doors open from 10am until 2pm. It’s a great chance for people of all ages to thank the hardworking men and women who selflessly respond to all manner of emergencies.
Children can climb aboard a fire engine, see firefighting equipment up close and take home an educational Brigade Kids activity booklet.
Adults can speak with the professionals to find out more about fire prevention, get advice on installing or replacing smoke alarms, and preparing a home fire escape plan.
FRNSW is focusing on fire prevention in the kitchen, urging people to ‘Keep Looking When Cooking’. We are reminded almost half of all home fires start in the kitchen, usually when people get distracted and leave things to burn on the stovetop.
Walk Safely to School Day
I urge parents to ditch the car and stretch their legs with their kids for the annual Walk Safely to School Day on Friday, May 19.
The national initiative has been supported by the NSW government since its 2001 inception and is designed to promote road safety, health and public transport. It’s a great day for exercise, family fun and pedestrian safety, especially for the little ones who should always hold an adult’s hand when out and about.
School drop off can be busy and stressful, and this is a great chance for families to slow down, have a nice walk, and take time to talk about pedestrian safety. Walk Safely to School Day is a valuable way to engage with parents, carers, teachers and students to highlight the importance of road safety. Last year an estimated 320 schools and 3600 parents took part.
