Friends of Kooloonbung Nature Park come from many backgrounds and vocations. Most of our volunteers are retired former school teachers, a carpenter, sheep farmer, forestry worker, and public servants.
Now we can add - artist in residence. Jean Ballands has joined our group for the year, as part of her studies for a Fine Arts Degree from Curtin University in Perth.
Jean initially contacted vice president Janet who gave her an ecological tour of the park. She then met the crew one Monday for a morning’s work. Jean was interested in the various ecosystems and how man has helped or hindered the preservation of the park. Her aim is to learn about the reconstruction and preservation work of the Friends of Kooloonbung.
Her initial fear of the unknown landscape subsided and was replaced with intrigue and enlightenment as she concentrated on the contrasts between the light and dark sections of the park.
Over 13 weeks, Jean energetically painted scenes from her photographs, adding her own take on the landscape. From these she has produced six large paintings which will be exhibited at Sunset Gallery in June.
Friends of Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park work mostly on Mondays from 8.30am until noon. If you are passionate about protecting the environment and would like to volunteer, contact Rex Moir on 0429 680 131.
