Port Macquarie Magpies are still searching for their first win of the season after they suffered a 10.14 (74) to 9.5 (59) defeat at the hands of the Tweed Coast Tigers.
The Magpies trailed by 10 points at the first change and led by five at the main break, but couldn’t hang on as the Tigers finished the stronger of the two teams.
Magpies midfielder Scott Dalton was encouraged by the performance and believes the team are heading in the right direction.
“Their delivery into the forward 50 was a bit better than ours and they capitalised on their opportunities,” he said.
“If you look at Coffs Harbour and Sawtell, they started the season slowly and ended up in the grand final last year.”
Dalton said it was the Magpies best performance of the season.
“We’re gaining momentum even if the results aren’t there just yet,” he said.
“We’ve lost a lot of the older players from last year.”
The Magpies haven’t given up hope of playing in the finals despite starting the season with four straight losses.
“We’ve got an inexperienced side, but we need to keep going because getting to play together each week means we will improve,” Dalton said.
“It’s something that happens with time.”
