I encourage local councils to apply for NSW government funding for essential dredging projects under the Rescuing Our Waterways program.
An extra $6 million over four years was recently announced as part of the NSW Coastal Dredging Strategy. It will help improve the accessibility, health and safety of our regional waterways for recreational and commercial vessels.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council could apply to dredge the Hastings River and Lake Cathie. Rescuing Our Waterways is a partnership between state government and councils and has already benefitted a communities along the coast.
Local councils should find out more to ensure our community continues to enjoy our coastal harbours and rivers. Councils can apply for up to 50 per cent of a project’s cost before June 23. Information: crownland.nsw.gov.au/crown_lands/coastal-harbours- and-river-entrances/rescuing- our-waterways
Short-term holiday letting
The short-term accommodation industry and the community will be part of a broad consultation led by the NSW government to address private holiday letting.
In October 2016, the NSW Parliament Legislative Assembly Committee on Environment and Planning made a number of recommendations relating to planning matters and strata laws following its public inquiry on the Adequacy of Regulation of Short Term Holiday Letting.
Community and industry feedback is needed to identify appropriate regulations in response to the recommendations. While short-term holiday letting, if properly managed and respected, can boost the local economy, the need to protect people’s rights to the quiet enjoyment of their own homes is equally important.
The government’s options paper will explore approaches to address the land use and planning issues, and strata management, including the amenity and safety of residents.
