Supporters marched from Town Beach to the Town Green on April 22 in a satellite event of the global March for Science.

A meeting followed at the Port Macquarie Historic Courthouse.

Dr Angela Frimberger, one of the local event organisers, said the global March for Science was the first step in a movement.

“It is a celebration of science and the contribution that science makes, and continues to make, in the quality of life of all of us every day, and it is a call for action,” she said.

“We feel it’s important that we as a society continue to value those contributions that science has made in our daily quality of life.”

The initiative calls for policy leaders and policymakers to work together to enact evidence-based policies for the public good.

The Mid-North Coast Regional Science Hub, funded through Inspiring Australia, has been formed to engage people in science and science-related activities.

A working group will be the next step.

Dr Frimberger said she hoped there would be continued interaction between scientists and the community.

The March for Science involved hundreds of events across the world.
