That ‘energy’, she says, is largely due to the input, support and effort of the volunteers.
Mel will this year take on the swim director’s role for Ironman Australia and the half Ironman event – the Ironman 70.3 Port Macquarie.
“There is just something about the Port Macquarie event. All the competitors feel it too. This local event ranks highly for me personally – and among all competitors – along with the Hawaii and New Zealand,” she said.
“This event is among the oldest Ironman in the world. It’s got a deeper feeling to it – it’s just got this great energy to it.
“I’ve competed in this race and I know how highly appreciative all competitors are for the many volunteers who consistently put their hand up to support this event.
“My entire family is involved in this event and I think I will always volunteer for Ironman here in Port Macquarie. But I’d still love to compete again in the future.”
While admitting to being ‘shattered’ to have to take on the swim director role from good friend Tony Wright who was seriously injured after being struck by a car in early March, Mel says she is content to pick up the baton on his behalf.

“Tony has worked this role for 10 years. I will just continue on and make it happen by letting the key workers do their thing,” she said.
“Each of our three surf clubs have specific roles to play while we will also have some lifeguards volunteering their time.
“We will be looking for some volunteers to act as water safety for swim practice sessions on the Thursday and Friday from 7am until 9am prior to the event.
“And I would encourage anyone interested in joining water safety to register their intention online.”
Mel admitted to ‘not being worried about the event’ adding that she will just need to increase her communication with everyone.
Set-up crews, setting the buoys and working with the start team and the crews manning the weir crossing were part and parcel of the role.
Ironman weekend is a real family affair with husband Todd competing alongside one of Mel’s squad members in Bennett Powell. Mel and Todd’s three children will also be volunteering in some capacity.
The Ironman Australia will again be held concurrently with the half Ironman – Ironman 70.3 Port Macquarie. The event is on Sunday May 7.
General entries close at 5pm on April 7 while late entries are from 5.01pm on April 7 until 5pm on April 28. Onsite entries are from 5.01pm on April 28 until May 6.
