TEAMS will converge on Port Macquarie this weekend for the 2017 Australian Sports Nutrition Port Futsal Cup.

Matches will be played at the new indoor stadium on Saturday and Sunday.

This will be the first time an international size court competition has been held in Port Macquarie, with many state and national level teams coming to compete, as well as local teams.

“We have some great Port talent representing us, as well as teams from Manning Futsal and the well drilled Atletico Brisbane for example,” Eastcoast Eagles Mick Day said.

"With the opening of the new addition to the Stadium, this is the first time that we have been able to hold an event on international size courts.

"There will be some great futsal on display with many top level players and coaches here.”

Fulltime outfit Atletico Brisbane will be the team to beat, as one of the few professional fulltime teams who will be competing.

“But I’m sure the NSW teams will give them a run for their money,” Day said.

"Its great to see Manning Futsal mens and womens teams now competing at this level, but there are also some young gun teams from FNNSW and Port Wolves who could cause an upset.

"I’d like to say thanks to local business, Australian Sports Nutrition Port Macquarie, who looks after all our Rep teams and players as the major sponsor of the tournament.”

The tournament is a big step in the right direction for the sport in Port Macquarie. It follows the news that three local women have been selected for Australia in the Futsal World Cup.

“It’s a massive achievement for these girls (Britt Hargreaves, Shannon Day and Sophie Jones),” Day said.

“It’s a tournament that only comes up once every four years, so to have three girls from Port Macquarie in the team is a big achievement. This is the first time a Port Macquarie futsal player has made it to the World Cup, which is a huge task.”
