But he was in town for long enough to win the open division at the Port Macquarie Surfboard Riders Club competition day on March 12.
Club president Terry Randall was impressed with Bourke’s performance at Town Beach.
“It was his first competition since he returned to Port Macquarie, so it’s a feather in his cap to do so well,” he said.
“The open division here is pretty competitive, but we like to try to develop our juniors so they can go on to bigger things if they want.”
Randall said teenagers Jack Clarke and Harry Hyatt were the club’s promising junior surfers who had ambitions to progress further.
“It’s such a high level to get on that professional circuit,” he said.
“But they are our two up-and-comers who also competed very well in the open division.”
