The Vikings head to Tamworth on Saturday for what could prove to be their final hit out before the season opener on April 22.
Howard is still trying to “lock down” his centre and fullback positions and strong performances in Tamworth could help him decide.
“I’m looking for a new centre pairing because Andrew West and Glen Littler won’t be there in round one,” he said.
“There are probably three or four blokes I’m looking at.”
Dan Willoughby and Sam Flanagan are two players Howard wants to see shine, along with Lachlan Smith and Jake Steward.
“Dan has been consistent for us for the last three years so he’ll get his chance at some stage,” the coach said.
The Vikings representative players have also put their hand up for the trip.
“Our blokes know the importance of trial games like these.”
