He believes there are many misconceptions about the dance style including that it can only be carried out by following country music. Rather music including Stand By Me by the Beatles has been used in choreography in Port Macquarie.
Mr Bowing said while people might start a dance in a square formation they will carry out a series of different dance moves throughout the session.
An introductory class to modern square dancing is on March 7 at the Port Macquarie Senior Citizens Hall.
The class will be on from 7pm until 8.30pm.
Mr Bowring said he would love it if people from the younger generation gave the class a try.
“What we really need is for a group of 20-something-year-olds from the university to come along to enjoy it and to bring others in,” he said.
No previous dance experience is required.
Mr Bowring describes the style as ‘solving a jigsaw puzzle’ where people are required to work as a team to work through the dance.
The person running the sessions will put together choreography to challenge the dancers.
“The choreography will be different every time you go,” Mr Bowring said.
Square dancing is international and can be an activity enjoyed while travelling.
“Once you’ve learnt to do it, you can do it anywhere around the world,” Mr Bowring said.
There are clubs in Tokyo, Japan where members have learnt the square dancing calls in english.
At the age of 14-years-old Mr Bowring started square dancing with other members of his family. He met his wife through being involved in a club in Victoria.
Mr Bowring and his wife ran a couple of square dancing clubs in Melbourne for about 23 years.
They moved to Port Macquarie five years ago and the Port Macquarie Square Dance Club has been operating for four years.
Members of the Port Macquarie Square Dance Club will often socialise after the class.
Square dancing is open to all age groups and families.
The cost of the class is $8 and the first one commences on Tuesday, March 7. For more information people can call 0408 340 990.
