It is all in a bid to put the issue of organ donation front and centre.
The August 5 ride, from Coffs Harbour to Port Macquarie with a group of motorcyclists, will encourage residents to join the Australian Organ Donor Register.
“I’ve come in contact with a range of people who have benefited from organ donation and I’m aware of quite a number of people who are languishing on waiting lists,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
The Cowper MP will do his bit to raise awareness in his electorate.
Mr Hartsuyker announced the ride outside Parliament House in Canberra on February 28 ahead of the Gift of Life DonateLife Walk.
Senator Derryn Hinch, who had a life-saving liver transplant in 2011, supports the initiative.
Mr Hartsuyker said the awareness raising ride was a way of connecting the community.
The keen motorcyclist plans to ride his Ducati from Coffs Harbour Health Campus to Port Macquarie Base Hospital, stopping off along the way to lift awareness about organ donation.
Tacking Point Lions Club has thrown its support behind the event.
Mr Hartsuyker said organ donation was a subject we sometimes found too confronting to discuss but organ donation was an issue every Australian should consider.
One organ and tissue donor can transform the lives of 10 or more people.
A record 1,448 Australians were given a second chance in 2016 thanks to the generosity of 503 deceased organ donors and their families.
About 60 per cent of families give consent for organ and tissue donation to go ahead.
Those who know the donation decision of their loved ones are more likely to give consent.
“I know it is a difficult topic to discuss but it is a discussion that must be had,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“There are lives depending on it.”
