A VIRGIN flight from Port Macquarie to Sydney was forced to make an emergency landing in Newcastle after smoke was detected in the aircraft’s cabin.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said Flight VA118 bound for Sydney was directed to Newcastle Airport at about 3pm on Wednesday (February 22).
Fire personnel from RAAF base also attended the scene along with paramedics in the event passengers required treatment for smoke inhalation.
A Virgin Australia spokesperson confirmed all passengers were evacuated off the plane safely.
“Virgin Australia flight VA1188 from Port Macquarie to Sydney has landed safely after diverting to Newcastle Airport this afternoon following the activation of a smoke warning.
“All passengers have disembarked the aircraft which was met by emergency crews as a precautionary measure.
“Virgin Australia will work to get all customers to their destination as soon as possible.
“Safety is Virgin Australia’s number one priority and we have immediately commenced a full investigation into the incident.”
