This past week has seen the most pleasant and stable weather for quite some time, with little wind and mild temperatures. If it holds out for the weekend, no doubt there will be plenty keen to take advantage and enjoy some great summer angling.

In the estuary, whiting have once again been excellent with some nice fish coming from Limeburners, the Maria and around Pelican Island. Worms and yabbies have both proven effective, as have surface lures of the stick bait and popper varieties. Flathead numbers also remain consistent through most sections of the Hastings.
Elsewhere in the estuary, a few blackfish have been extracted from the weed beds in the back channel, with lightly weighted yabbies the method of choice.
Bream numbers have been reasonable with the better catches reported from around the canals and Limeburners, with soft plastics and hard bodied lures both successful.
On the crustacean front, there have been rumours of a few prawns caught late in the night at Lake Cathie, however, on the whole, results remain inconsistent at best. Crab numbers are terrific, with the Hastings continuing to produce consistent numbers of both blue swimmers and muddies.
Lighthouse Beach has produced a steady stream of tailor, albeit in the chopper class, along with a few bream, whiting, salmon and school mulloway. Fishing after dark has produced the better results, but be warned there is plenty of vermin in between the more palatable species.
North Beach has also been productive for bream and school mulloway, while the beaches around Laurieton have fished well for tailor.
Off the rocks, reasonable numbers of bream have been taken, with both Point Plomer and Lighthouse worth a look after dark, or at first light. Pick of the baits have been either mullet or tailor strips. Tailor remain active in both locations.
A few better than average school mulloway were also taken from around Plomer on fresh tailor slabs. Blackfish have been reported from around Shelley’s for anyone interested in floating a bit of cabbage around the washes.
North of Port there have been reports of land-based game, but little locally. I expect this will remain the same until the warm blue water finally arrives close to shore. Outside, despite the cooler water temperature and the colour not as blue in close as we would like at this time of year, the seas have been kind and some good action is there to be had.
The reefs off Plomer continue to fish well for kingfish, teraglin and mulloway, along with a sprinkling of snapper. Barries Bay has also held a few cobia, however the mackerel action has been inconsistent. If we get a burst of current and clean water, this can change overnight.
Wider out, the FAD is holding a few small mahi mahi, while marlin numbers are excellent for the game fishing enthusiasts.
Until next week, good fishing and tight lines to all.
