If caring area residents knew more about the cruel treatment of animals used by travelling shows, they'd think twice before buying a ticket.
Circuses haul around lions, monkeys, ponies, camels and donkeys who are forced to perform confusing and complicated "tricks" night after night that they would never naturally engage in without the constant threat of punishment. They are trained to be fearful and obedient.
Animals used in circuses are confined to cramped cages for months on end. They are denied everything that is natural and important to them.
The RSPCA have stated that they are opposed to the use of exotic animals, such as large cats and non-human primates (monkeys) by circuses, because “the requirements of circus life are not compatible with the physiological, social and behavioural needs of these animals”.
A total of 50 council areas, including Newcastle, Lismore, Melbourne, the Gold Coast and the entire Australian Capital Territory have banned circuses that use exotic animals.
Until all councils follow suit, animals in circuses will continue to live and die in misery.
