Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker joined NBN Co workers and personnel on the corner of Church and Owen St for a demonstration of the hauling of fibre.
It entails laying hundreds of metres of fibre cable underground, which is the backbone to the network.
There are three ways the NBN can be delivered to homes and businesses – fibre to the node (FTTN), fixed wireless or satellite.
Around 21,000 premises in Port Macquarie and surrounding areas including Thrumster, North Shore and Fernbank Creek will receive fixed line by the middle of the year, while another 7,000 homes in Port will be connected by the end of the year.
For FTTN eligible customers, the NBN runs fibre to a node or a cabinet in the street, and then uses existing infrastructure to access your home.
This will allow about 90 percent of people in town to receive download speeds up to 90 megabits per second.
High-speed broadband is essential infrastructure for the 21st century.

“Building the NBN is absolutely a step above what we currently have,” said NBN manager of corporate affairs for NSW/ACT Kelly Stevens.
“We encourage people to shop around when the NBN is available to you. Have a think about how you use the internet and talk to your retailer about what you need and what speed package will suit your needs.”
Mr Hartsuyker said the availability of reliable, affordable, high speed internet access has been the number one issue raised with him by Port Macquarie residents since he was elected to represent the area in July last year.
“High-speed broadband is essential infrastructure for the 21st century, and the NBN will provide a platform to deliver a range of economic and social benefits to residents in Port Macquarie,” he said.
“Faster internet services also create new opportunities for students to participate in immersive learning experiences, from their classroom or at home. And families will have the affordable bandwidth to access modern services and entertainment.”
