“There are people who are incredibly lonely in our community,” he said.
The community care organisation celebrated the official opening of its new centre located at Clarence House Building on February 17.
The event was attended by volunteers, staff and representatives from welfare groups and was an opportunity for people to connect.
People Builders was originally known as The E-Centre and over the last 12 years it has evolved.
Mr Atherton said the group’s volunteers follow the three principles of encourage, equip and empower to help others.
The centre offers a range of services for the community including emotional support, women groups, youth programs, mentoring programs and life skill courses.
People Builders Centre manager Louella Polson said it is very important for the People Builders to welcome everyone.
“It’s all about relationships and just wanting to be friends,” she said.
“So that people can feel safe and are welcome to come in anytime.
“The kettle is always on.”
Ms Poulson said the centre can give people hope.
She said at the moment there are a lot of people who are struggling and who need someone to talk to.
The Local Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams attended the event on February 17 and cut the ribbon to signify the centre’s opening.
Mrs Williams said she ‘took her hat off’ to all the hard work of the volunteers who have dedicated their time to implementing many different initiatives over the past 12 years.
She said it’s important for all welfare groups to connect and identify areas which need to be addressed.
